Maldives Inaugurates Hanimaadhoo Airport Built With India’s Support
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the Hanimaadhoo International Airport, a key infrastructure project financed under India’s Line of Credit assistance.

The new airport, hailed as a “gateway to prosperity,” is expected to transform the northern Maldives by boosting tourism, trade, and regional connectivity.

Symbol of Economic Transformation

President Muizzu described the airport as more than just a transport facility, calling it a “symbol of economic transformation.” He stated that the new international terminal would advance tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and overall social development in the northern atolls. The project represents a strategic effort to decentralise economic opportunities and promote balanced national growth.

India’s Role in the Project

Funded through India’s USD 800 million Line of Credit extended by EXIM Bank in 2019, the airport’s construction was executed by India’s JMC Projects at a cost of USD 136.6 million. The initiative aligns with India’s “Neighbourhood First” and “MAHASAGAR” visions, focusing on strengthening regional cooperation and maritime connectivity across the Indian Ocean. The Indian High Commission in Malé described the airport as “a true vehicle for progress and prosperity.”

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Indian Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu attended the inauguration ceremony alongside senior officials from both nations. The event coincided with the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic relations. Earlier, Naidu met Maldives’ Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel to discuss expanding collaboration in connectivity, trade, and infrastructure. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to mutual growth and regional stability.
